Egr Trouble

Hi Guys,
Here's my situation. I have an 87 TPI 305. I failed smog (nox) and am having some trouble under normal cruising. I'm thinking it's my egr that's giving my the problem. I had it replaced 2 years ago but it seems to be doing the same thing it did 2 years ago.
How can I check it? If I need to remove and clean it how do you recommend doing this? Horrible place for them to put a part that seems to go bad often.
Thanks for the help

Re: Egr Trouble

high nox is caused as a result of high combustion chamber temps, which could be from over advanced timing, bad catalyst, non functioning egr or excessive carbon in the chambers.when you cruise on the highway do you ever hear any pinging?if you do check out the egr and timing.the egr on your car has a temp sensor on it so you should get a code if it wasent functional after a breif highway run do you have a check engine light on at any time?

Re: Egr Trouble

Thanks for the reply. I do get a little pinging, not all of the time. I'm not throwing any codes. The car really is stumbling when I get on the throttle. Fuel pressure is good and the filter is clean. Cleaned my maf too but it is still brown on one side and silver on the other.
