Hi guys im new to the TPI world coming from the LT1 world so I really dont know much. I have a dumb question. I have a 88 Iroc 305 tpi with 88000 miles that i picked up cheap witch is blowing white smoke out the exhaust when the car idles or you give the car gas.Wich leads me to believe its a cracked cylender head since the previous owner said he had replaced the head gaskets.
Well I ended up getting a complete 92 SD 305 tpi with 90000 miles from a z28. I was wondering if i could use the 92 heads on my 88. Or if if i would be able to use the 92 305 engine and have it run with all my MAF equipment and if so, what would I have to do to make it work Thanks in advance for your patience and help..

Yes you can use the heads. But i'd just swap the whole motor over and retain the maf system.
agreed. MAF is much easier to work with. You can perform many upgrades without modification to the ecm/prom
Ok sounds good. So would it just be a matter of of dropping the engine in and connecting all MAF equipment back?Or would I have to use my old injectors and harness and intake on the 92 engine due to the 88 ecm beein programmed for the cold start injector ? Sorry guys complete noob to this engines. Like I said come frome the LT1 world. Did a cam swap on my 107,00 mile LT1 drove it for a day and I spun a rod bearing. So now im trying 2 get this Iroc on the road since I got a good deal on it while I save money for a forged 355. Thanks again.

Great topic, as I am also a noob in this arena as well. I also have an 88 IROC. It is also a TPI with rebuilt 350 motor - all forged internals, decent cam, not radical, headers, and a Hypertech chip. Car has to have 93 octane or better to run right. Right now I am putting about 325 HP to the wheels. My question is, at this point what can I do with thisTPI and this motor to pep it up even more. I dont really want to do a manifold and carb swap, as the motor runs really nice. I am just trying to get more HP and performance out of it if I can. I was told the computer in this year Z, is not one that offers the ability to reprogram or modify. I was told you plug in the best pre-programmed chip in it and go. I might be oversimplifying this? In order to really increase the performance, could I run larger injectors to help, or am I going to have to get yet another chip in conjunction with it? Ive thought about swapping to a higher rear end gear like a 3:90 since I have overdrive to help as well. Any and all opinions or advice would be appreciated.

Well, it's late, and I'm tired, but that's pretty much it. there might be some minor differences but none that I can really think of. Obviously there are some different sensors etc. etc., but as for the engine, it's pretty much the same. Just different software. Again, not saying NO differences at all, but it's pretty straight forward.Ok sounds good. So would it just be a matter of of dropping the engine in and connecting all MAF equipment back?

87 was the last year for cold start.Or would I have to use my old injectors and harness and intake on the 92 engine due to the 88 ecm beein programmed for the cold start injector ?

No carb on a TPI.My question is, at this point what can I do with thisTPI and this motor to pep it up even more. I dont really want to do a manifold and carb swap,

I'm flabbergasted that a TPI car running a hypertech can put down 325. Amazing, if in fact that's accurate. ....regardless, that hypertech is NOT helping you AT ALL. You REALLY need a custom tune.and a Hypertech chip. Car has to have 93 octane or better to run right. Right now I am putting about 325 HP to the wheels.

Totally wrong. Slap the guy who told you that. They're tuning LS7's and LS9's. You can surely tune a L98 from 1988. ...off the shelf chips aren't really what you want. They're not BAD per se, but they don't accomodate for what you have. Basic bolt ons and mild cams are about all the computer can handle with stock or off the shelf tunes. Beyond that, you need a tune.I was told the computer in this year Z, is not one that offers the ability to reprogram or modify. I was told you plug in the best pre-programmed chip in it and go.

Well, again, I'm really not sure what all you've got going on. 325 at the wheels with a hypertech, stock injectors, big cam and heads....ehhhh....I dunno. I go and have a cutom tune done for what you have. If you need injectors, then do it. Whoever does the tune will be able to tell if you're not getting enough fuel.In order to really increase the performance, could I run larger injectors to help, or am I going to have to get yet another chip in conjunction with it? ....with regards to gearing, remember that a TPI is a torque monster. Go too high on the gear and you'll spin spin spin, then peak too early and be done. I've got LESS power than you, and I've got 3.27:1 gears and I can spin for day. I'd look into maybe 342/345 gears, or at the most, 370/373 gears. However on a side note, I put in a 2400 stall converter in the tranny and the difference was amazing!!!!
So I'd look into a custome tune, gears, and a converter.
