building 89 camaro
ok lets start.bought my son a 89 camaro RS that was a 305 TBI 5 speed car.no motor or trans.it will be a TPI 5 speed when done.we r going to put my rebuild 1975 350 motor that has 10.1 compression, mild cam,0.30 over in it.i have a complete TPI motor for parts so i have all required parts for that.we also bought a 5 speed trans.now i know fuel pump has to be changed.engine harness, throddle cable isnt a big deal.now with the ECM,if i get one from a donor TPI car, what do i do about the prom?i read somewhere about having it redone for what i do to the motor.also will the stock injectors work fine with this set up?can i use a corvette throddle body with bigger air ports?
Re: building 89 camaro
You don't say what size tpi motor you have for parts. You also don't mention the year of the donor motor. 1985 had a first year ecm. 1986-1988 used an updated ecm. 1985-1988 used a 9th injector for cold start enrichment. 1989 was programed for enrichment settings on cold start through the 8 injectors and 9th injector eliminated. In 1990-1992 G.M. switched from maf to speed density. Any of the set ups will work, but you need to know what you have. 305 comes stock with 19# injectors 350 uses 22# injectors. If the engine is mild enough, the 19# injectors will work in a 350, but you must reprogram the prom to know it has a 5.7 liter and not a 5 liter motor. If you are going to use the knock sensor, you must use a 350/5.7 liter knock sensor with a 350/5.7. If you stick the 305/5.0 liter knock sensor in the bigger engine, it will constantly detect false knocks and pull timing.
Re: building 89 camaro
SORRY ABOUT THAT.I HAVE A 90 CAMARO 5.0 TPI MOTOR FOR MY PARTS.YES I WAS WANDERING ABOUT THE INJECTORS.I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT ECM REPROGRAMMING AND IS ABOUT 435.00 FOR THAT.NOW I WAS HEARING I COULD USE A 305 KNOCK SENSOR AND BE FINE.SO UR SAYING A 350 KNOCK SENSOR IS THE BETTER WAY TO GO.I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE I DID THIS RIGHT.

Re: building 89 camaro
how much power are you looking to make?? That would help with injector size. If your shooting for around 300-350hp I would run 24# injectors. PCMforLESS.com can tune your computer with custom parameters for I think around $300. Be careful building power using a T-5 trans though. They were not put behind factor 350s for a reason, very weak. common problem seems to be losing 3rd gear under power. I believe the WC t-5s are rated at 300 ft.lbs. of torque which you probably will surpass with a 350 tpi (since stock 350tpi are 345 ft.lbs.)
Re: building 89 camaro
NOT SURE ON POWER.NEVER HAD THE HORSEPOWER CHECKED.I GUESS I BETTER CHECK INTO BETTER INJECTORS.I WAS HEARING ABOUT THE T-5 NOT BEING STRONG.SO I GUESS I CAN HOW IT HOLDS UP.
Re: building 89 camaro
I'm running a T-5 behind a 350 on a T/A. I haven't had any problems with it, but I don't speed shift or power shift it either. 300 rwhp seems to be the "magic number" for the detonation point on a t-5.
Regarding the knock sensor, bore size is what influenses knock sensor functionality. A 305 knock sensor will think the 350 is knocking at any rpm at any time and will pull timing radically to the point that you will think it is always in limp home mode. If you are going to use the knock sensor, get one for the 350.
