EGR System Issues... Solenoid?
EGR System Issues... Solenoid?
Hello All,
(1990 Camaro IROC-Z, 305 TPI, A/T)
I have been having a few issues with my EGR system. Unfortunately here in Canada I can't just disconnect the system and be done with it, as we have emission tests.
I will try and sum this up as best as possible...
Last summer I replaced the EGR valve on my car to pass the emission test. All went fine and it was legally drivable. I ran into some issues last summer with the engine just stalling out while driving along (normally when slowing down or at a stop) and on the rare occasion it would act up completely. (Complete loss of power, bucking and surging like crazy, SES flicks on)... eventually the SES would go off and things would return to normal. The code I had was a 32.
I disconnected the solenoid power/plugged the plenum vacuum hose (so the EGR system wouldn't work) and my car ran perfect, no issues at all. I assumed it was my solenoid, as I replaced the EGR valve for the emission test earlier. I bought a new solenoid (for an RS I believe) and threw it on.
Well, with the new solenoid hooked up, my car refuses to Idle properly... it surges like crazy and eventually stalls out when in any gear other than Park or Neutral.
I'm stumped on this one... as to my knowledge, the solenoid is simply a vacuum device that opens and closes based on the electrical current. Confused why my stock one wouldn't idle like crazy (has drivability issues instead), but this new one doesn't even idle correctly.
I tested both of the solenoids on my battery; they both make a successful "click" sound.
Clueless on this one, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Remove, and clean up your IAC valve, re-install it, set it up properly, and see what happens!!

is it possible you installed the vaccum line going to the egr vavle on the vent nipple. start car pull vaccum line to vavle and is if there is vaccum there. if so then unplug connector and if vacum goes away then you got wire or ecm problems

I had similur problem i found my egr temp switch bad. Its easy to check with test light, just see if its grounded all the time with key off if it is its junk. it looks like a little 02 sensor plugged into the egr.
