L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

What do you think is the easiest way to take a stock L98 and get it to the 13's?

Im assuming stock they run high 15's - low 16's. is that correct?

Re: L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

Not sure if it would get you 13's but, Headers+Exhaust and a more aggressive cam that will still work with a TPI is a good start, And some good tires if you have trouble hooking.

And i believe you may be a little mistaken, The TPI L98 ran with the 5.0 mustangs when they came out, so that should near the high 14's? Not to sure, 14.3 is sticking in my head but so is 15.3, i cant remember. 14.8 to... but thats around there time. But im positive they didnt run 16's.

Re: L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

A good running L98 should do mid 14s around 95MPH.

Bolt ons like headers and a good exhaust system and maybe 1.6 roller rockers would get you close. With good traction that should give you a high 13 around 99-100 MPH.

1.6 Rockers, Airfoil, Throttle Body Spacer, Shift Kit, and Hypertech Chip got me to 14.0's (coulda been 13's in the right air). Then I put on some shorty headers, 3.73 gear, and a 2800-3200 converter which put it into the 13.40's. Hope this helps ya.

My original 1988 IROC 350 went 13.96 in good weather (45 degrees) with a gutted converter, flowmaster muffler, modified MAF/airbox and underdrive pullies. Pretty much very low dollar stuff. It had 2.77 gears too and ran on street radials

My 1992 B4C went 13.92 in fair weather (70 degrees) with a modified airbox. This was also on street radials, but the B4C had dual converters and 3.23 gears which I think made the difference. It ran well......I'll bet it would have went 13.70's with more runs.....I only made 2 passes with it. Who said police cars weren't ringers??

The current 1988 IROC with 140k on it went 14.45 two weeks ago in good weather. All stock except a modified airbox and it was shifting at 4800 RPM. Thats pretty much where my original car started so minor mods and it will be there too.

Temperature (the car and weather) makes a huge difference. I have noted almost a 1/2 second in some cases.

Re: L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

Bone stock with 51K miles, my formula ran 14.7 at around 93mph. With underdrive pulleys, SLP cold air, plugs wires and msd coil, edelbrock cat back now runs 13.8-14 flat depending on the temperature and air at the track. I played with the timing a while back and got it to do a 13.6 but that was advanced 8 degrees. Without adavncing the timing and with headers I feel it could do 13.6's or better consistantly.

Re: L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

my car did 13.94 @ 99mph

engine was a 355ci L98. stock TPI runners, plenum and manifold
stock unported L98 iron heads
93 LT1 cam, 1.5 full roller rockers (summit brand)
hooker 2055 headers and Y pipe, single 3" cat, 3" dynomax catback
6 speed trans with 3:42 gears
'92 speed density, Tuned by Kevin and Dyno Don

it was pretty much a stock engine, the 93 LT1 cam has a bit more lift and i was using a full roller rocker.... but other than that it was just a good exhaust system and an excellent tune

Re: L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

My bone stock 90 5.7 G92 IROC went 13.7@100mph with a full exhaust system an a gutted air box with 190.000 miles on the motor. 3.23 gears. Remember a G92 car will be 3-4 tenths quicker than a non G92 car.

A stock G92 5.7 car will run 14.4@96

The easiest way to identify a G92 car is to look under the car and see if it has dual factory cats an or 2 pipes just behind the front right tire.

This is correct.

The G92 option with an auto trans got you 3.23 (3.27 w/ 9 bolt) instead of 2.73/2.77 gears.

With a manual trans G92 got you 3.42 (3.45 w/ 9 bolt) instead of 3.08 gears.

The dual converter exhaust was option N10 and available 89-92. N10 came with G92 in those years.

Re: L98 TPI to 13's - What mods?

headers, tb bypass, better catback with or without high flow cats, nice stall 2400 or higher, lower control arms, torque arm, panhardbar and some skinnys up front and slicks in back, rear girtle. shift kit. subframe connectors. ac delete setup. i think thats about all that was done to the car and it ran a 13.1 at 105. suspension and traction is key to any good times. do that before you go digging through the engine or throwing parts at it.
