easy horse power gains?

I'm looking for some easy and cheap ways to boost my HP. I know you guys may spear me for using the word cheap but I'm not big on money at the moment. Any ideas would be much appreciated

Re: easy horse power gains?

If your running a 305 you might look for a junkyard 350 out of a pickup. Its 14% more engine, so thats 14% more power. Put a LT1 used cam or a cheap one you find here on the boards in it. New timing chain. And a steel shim gasket. That all should be good for TONS more torque and horsepower, depending on the cam of course.

You could do that for more time than money, especially if you have friends who might have stuff you can trade for. Including labor (IE Beer for Work).

Now granted that all isnt too easy, but it could be a cheap project that will be fun and will keep you out of trouble haha.

Without going into the engine, a good tune up (plugs and wires), new fuel filter, K&N air filter, tps air foil, and an underdrive pulley set did wonders for my 91Z convertible's 305.

Re: easy horse power gains?

Freshen up the engine with new spark plugs, play with the plug gaps, new wires/coil/cap/ etc to ensure a good running motor. Gut the air box out and get a good filter. Try adjusting base timing to 8-10 deg to see what happens.

Get some tuning equipment and burn a chip for it, could find a few ponies in there. Thats about all you can do without diving into the motor and starting to spend some money on parts.

underdrive pulley expense... will gain you nothing... compared to a cam, springs and or 1.6 rockers... air foil waste of time & money... filters normal maint...
air intake & exhaust is always a gain....
