5.7 vortec bottom end to become TPI?

Currently running a 87 IROC 305 TPI.

I've got a 5.7 vortec short block (heads are cracked) out of a 97' 1500. ~150,000 miles.

Pretty sure that means its two bolt main, but this is a street car, nothing serious.

Thinking about pulling the 5.7 out from under the counter, giving it a set of rings and bearings, and putting it in the camaro using the TPI setup.

Heres where i need some help/ideas/opinions.

I need a set of heads.

I looked all over for a set of vortecs to put back on this engine to no prevail before it was finally decided to have the engine replaced . Only heads available were either new or re-mans.

Would my current 305 heads work, or should i try to find something different?

Looking for a good streetable cam to install also if i can find someone to tune the ECM for it.

Im not really in this for a high horsepower racing hot rod. This car is moreso a cruiser, than a bruiser. I'm looking for drive-ability and M.P.G.

Anyone got any good head/cam combinations for this setup?

Re: 5.7 vortec bottom end to become TPI?

hi i have a 1988 TA originally a 305 TPI Im now building an L05 350 out of my old 9C1 police pack caprice and Im going to put the heads off of my 305 with the TPI setup several people have told me to do this but ive been told that i have to have the heads machined. I am no expert but Im pretty stumped and im not sure what heads work and what dont so I guess i am wondering the same thing as you.......... hoping someone here can help. as far as the 2 or 4 bolt issue before the experts lash me I think,,,,, I MAY BE WRONG if so im sorry,, still learning but 87 and newer are 2 bolt mains but again im not sure.

I like the 113 vette heads good bang for the low buck. your heads will work though but small valves torquey

Re: 5.7 vortec bottom end to become TPI?

I wouldn't bother with the Vortec heads as you'll need a Vortec TPI base to go with it....
Your original 305 heads will fit just fine on your 350 short block.
The Increase in compression ratio from the smaller 305 combustion chamber (Measure them...) might help that seat of the pants feel. (increased Tq)
The Intake valve might be a little small @ 1.84 if memory serves me correctly instead of the 350's 1.94 or aftermarket 2.02" valve, but because of the TPI's RPM limit the smaller valve shouldn't hurt you at all in my opinion... it wasn't previously right

Check out the Camshaft write-up https://www.thirdgen.org/mods3 find something that is close to your original cam maybe one size larger...
I might be wrong here but, I think that the 97 truck blocks were 4 bolt bottom ends, with roller cams SBC's

I was gonna go with a World's S/R Torquer 305 head at 58cc chambers on my 350 but changed my mind just before I put them on... went with AirFlow Research instead.

I say go for it!!
But if I was gonna play devil's advocate you could...
