Electronic Fuel Pump Install

OK, wasn't sure where to post this. Since it's related to the fuel delivery of my TPI, i figured this would be a good start...

I have to change out my fuel pump. I can't seem to get more than 25-30 psi at the rail and it drops to nothing within seconds of turning the car off. I have a new Holley adjustable regulator, new injectors, all new o-rings and do not smell fuel leaking anywhere. The filter is fairly new too. I have tested the pressure driving also with same results. (I'm assuming it's the pump, don't know what else it could be)

With that said, I need to drop the fuel tank to get to the pump, my question is;
Has anyone done this without having to drop the rear-end out of the car?? I looked back in the records that the P.O gave me and found where he paid a mechanic to change the last one, the receipt only states removing the exhuast and about an hour labor for the pump install, obviously they didnt drop the rear end for 1 hour labor...

Any input from anyone that has done this??

Re: Electronic Fuel Pump Install

one hour? i would pull back the carpet behind the rear seat back and look for an "access" panel. there wasnt one from the factory. i have changed out a pump twice now. one went bad ad the other was for my tpi conversion. first time it took all day, taking my time. second time it took about four hours from start to finish. empty the tank, get the rear enda high in the air, drop the wheels, exaust, sway bar links, fuel lines at connections and axle, and panhard. lower the rear as low as you can, undo the strps and heat shields and wiggle it out. take your time and have patience.

Re: Electronic Fuel Pump Install

For 1 hour of labor theirs got to be a hole In ur trunk if not track down that mechanic since it's at least a 4 hour job.I removed it a few days ago on an iroc and it took about 5 hours.we didn't drop the rear end we just had the car lifted up prety high so threre was enough room to slip(more like beat)out the tank.I didn't even need to cut the exhAust since the previous owner never even got it welded up,it was just clamped on here lol.

Re: Electronic Fuel Pump Install

Yea, It looked like he used some shady mechanics from looking through the receipts. The more I look at it, it was $92 for the labor in 2006, that may have been 2 hours, and $70 R&R the exhaust.
I want to do it myself, I'm not big on letting anyone else work on my baby! Lol

this will be my project next weekend.

Cool.you check for an acces hole.if it's already there the damage is done and u might as well use it.if not then u got a nice project ahead of you.fiy if you're not gonna drop the rear end but just let it hang enough to pull out the tank be aware that you're gonna probable beat on the filler tube a bit and probably bend it up.remember to take out all the gas and good luck
