305 lB9 Upgrade advice path
I know this is been beat to death in multiple topics BUT many are very older threads and last several months are more trouble shooting issues. All good and fun but I am getting into a new refurb of an 88 IROC 305 TPI auto LB9
Not necessarily looking for specific build specs just general consensuses of peoples personal experience of building the LB9 and results (happy or not)
I want a fun street car with v8 sound rumble, pin you back when you stomp on it and catch most modern cars off guard from a red light. stock 4 and 6 bangers for sure and hang with or beat some modern v8 from a light or entrance ramp stretch. Might go to track for fun but I would like to have high 13sec car mids 13 be nice but 14 flat worse case all motor and if not enough through a wet NOS system all working with the stock lb9.
Car is at the shop needs a new tranny which I have the spare ready. I told the guy what I want and my goals above plus just get the car running and drivable then I will paint it. I have done a 305 TBI LO3 before and was great street motor like I had above. about a 14.3 car all motor but for the cost I was disappointed once I got the bug. I dropped like $3500 in labor alum heads exhaust cam intake chip gear and nos to get to the 14.2
But it was upsetting when stock 4th gens beat me out and modded cars ate my lunch. The nos helped. and on the street by itself the car did destroy a lot but that was 15 years ago now cars are faster and better.
so shop guy said for probably $1000 (after tranny swap) do a port job, intake head match and cam headers and should easily be 75+ hp on the LB( and I imagine I am in the 13.8-14.0 range?
I do not want to buy new heads (maybe get l98?) or spend much more then $1000 on the 305 if I will be in same boat as the lo3 and wanting more when for probably $3000 I could just have a simple 355 bottom end built and installed with the TPI
And I thought of simple 2000 jegs with a carb as well chuck the tpi.
I do like the look of the tpi and love the torque and if i can keep it and cheaper then full swap I hope a few bolts ons can get the job done over the Lo3.
I KNOW that bone stock I will not probably feel any seat of pants from the lb9 or have any street kills? so at a minimum I would want to and easily pay a few hundred to just swap the cam, headers maybe gear. (assuming of course 100% working order)
Anyone have feedback on their bolted on LB9? Vs a LO3 or before/after 355 swap. Was it worth the bolt ons? Or should have just kept bone stock and saved for 355? was a simple LB9 with stock heads ported, cam, headers get some good ET numbers or have good red light power, seat of pants torque?
Any feedback would be great
thanks guys

Sticky tires like a Micley Thompson drag radial 245/50/16
2400-2600rpm stall torque converter/shift kit/trans cooler
100 shot of nitrous oxide, Nitrous Express LT1 wet kit works good
Exhaust? Put a 40 series flowmaster where your cat converter curently resides and dump it by the passenger door. Best sounding 305 I've ever heard was mine when I did this. it also saves about 50lbs off of the car.
These mods take you from a 15 second car to a 12-13 second car.
They most importantly DO NOT NEED custom pcm tuning to work properly. The tremendous amount of torque will test your driveshaft/rear gear and axles. Mo power mo problems.. Goodluck! That is the cheapest and easiest way to a quick TPI setup.

Yes that would definitely get it done. But I like a little more day to day NA grunt? Or so I thnk
with the 2400 stall and good tires (I will do headers and exhaust for sure) I would be strong pulling low 14 sec car (with a cam even better) hmmmm
then 100 shot is typically good for 1-1.2 sec so your down at low 13's your syaing
Thanks
