Wont start after fixing fuel tank leak ?!
Hey guys,
Ive recently repaired my filler neck with some fuel tank repair compound as i found it was weeping like most other people have had, started the car up and it was fine, then drove to the petrol station and put fuel in.
I noticed that the WHOOSH had returned too which hadnt been happening for a couple of years ! so i thought all was well. I done a 60 mile round trip that day, the car ran totally fine, got home put it away in the garage.
When i returned the next morning to go out again, it would just crank over and over and over but would not fire up at all. i took the dizzy cap off, it all looked fine but i gave it a clean anyway, checked the coil, all the leads, everything seemed fine.
Then i took the spark plugs out and noticed they were all wet and black and smelt of fuel, so i cleaned them all up and dried them, and tried the car and still nothing.
after that i checked it was getting a spark on No. 1 cylinder which it was, and weirdly while doing this the car started sputtering into life, so i put the plug back in and tried again and he then started up, ran rough for about 2 minutes then smoothed out and was fine ! i let it run for about 15 minutes before switching off, out of curiosity i removed the gas cap but there was no WHOOSH this time ?
So anyway, fast forward to yesterday where i went to get the car out of the garage and guess what...wouldnt start, the exact same thing. I had time to take a plug out to check and it was black and wet again already.
SO.... have i broke something with a surge of pressure when i repaired my leak, or just something else altogether ?
the dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads, plugs, ign module and coil have all been replaced over the last couple of years and are in A1 condition visually

Re: Wont start after fixing fuel tank leak ?!
Im wondering if this is some sort of electrical problem, or maybe the spark module ?
I used the car yesterday, it was running great, no problems, although i was a bit nervous when i got to where i was going and obviously had to turn the car off in the car park, but it started right back up no problem.
Today however, it wouldnt start at first, after a fair bit of cranking with my foot on the accelerator held to the floor it did start catching and eventually spluttered to life and felt like it was misfiring quite badly for a few minutes until it started warming up, maybe because the plugs were burning off fuel or something ?
Once its been running though it seemed to start right back up again no problem :/

Ive had a quiet ticking from the top end which ive been told is the injectors, I done the OHM test on them last summer and they all checked out ok.
If they are leaking is that why the plugs are wet with fuel causing little or no spark which in turn makes it really hard to start up ?

If the injectors are leaking it's definitely a possibility. Are they the Multitec injectors?

I assume so yeah, ive had the car just over 9 years and i havnt replaced them, and they look stock. I put a bottle of Redex injetor cleaner in once a year and ive never had any problems.
If it is the injectors then oh well, ive got a 5.7 TPI engine sitting in the garage im doing up which will include new injectors, so im not buying new injectors for this 5.0
Is there a sure way to tell if it is the injectors thats my problem ? it was running fine on sunday evening and i havnt touched the car since, should i take a plug out and see if its wet? that would mean they are leaking while its just standing ?

Re: Wont start after fixing fuel tank leak ?!
the car started tonight, ive noticed if i put my foot to the floor on the accelerator before i try and start it, it usually fires up after a little bit of cranking.
Someone told me to do this as it stops the injectors firing and lets the maximum amount of air in ?
as soon as it starts its fine, i let it run for a while and i can switch it off, and it will immediatly start back up without me touching the pedal, just off the key. Im thinking this is because its burnt off the fuel that was previously there so theres nothing stopping it starting again
