L98 89 IROC Looking for 300 - 325 HP
Hello all
I have a 89 Camaro IROC with a L98 TPI engine. I have a very modded Trans Am for my go fast fix, but want to get a bit more out of my Camaro.
I want to bump the power to 300 - 325 hp from the 240 it has as economically as possible. I have a friend with a mandrel bender that will build me a cat back exhaust and would rather not use headers as the stock look is important to me.
I am thinking a tune, cat back and possibly a camshaft may accomplish my goal, but have no clue as to what camshaft to use if I need one. Would any of you have any suggestions on how to bump it to just over 300 hp?
Or am I not on the right track and need to go with headers and or different heads to hit 300 - 325 hp?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
I did a search, looked through the first 4 pages

Everything I have seen and researched will say you need headers. Dyno Don makes some of the best shorty headers available for our cars. As far as cam I can't speak on experience but am planing on a Launti 10030 which is very similar to the LT4 hot cam.
Ported intake, better runners, headers, cam (supporting mods also), full exhaust and a good tune should get you 300 or very close.
Hope this helps.

Since I am not willing to get away from the stock look the route I'm going is a magnaflow dual cat set up from the manifolds back, custom tune by Westers, a different carrier and a gear swap to something around a 3:43 to replace the 2:77s it now has.
The magnsflow exhaust will give me the rumble I want - the tune and gear change will have to do for the thrust.
Thanks for your advice.

Re: L98 89 IROC Lokking for 300 - 325 HP
What kind of power do you expect after the tune/exhaust?
Ensure to step up to a K&N filter to allow a little more free flow. Keep your ignition components in great shape (potentially run accel stuff) as there is often power loss there people don't consider.

Thanks for the reply. With the tune, dual cats and magnaflow it may make 20 to 25 more horse power. I already have two K&Ns in it and I keep it tuned. Expect the gear swap to make a significant difference.

If he wants to keep it stock looking he can get close to 300 with stock heads. This thread is old but proves my point. Guy make 275 rwhp with stock heads. Yes they are holding him back but he is making good power.

With a better cam, runners and tune it could be done I believe.
