Is anyone running the SD3816 intake (vortec)
I may be interested in putting one in a truck, but thought maybe the TPI experts here may have some experiences on running this setup their camaros.

LOTS of people running it, and tons of info if you run a search on Vortec TPI. Obviously the characteristics of a TPI and vortecs heads go well together. Both shine down low under the curve. I don't think many people have had any real problems with that intake, however, unfortunately, other than allowing the use of vortec heads, it's not really better than stock, in terms of airflow. Most aftermarket intakes flow better. This one doesn't really. Maybe a little. Still, the heads are worth the swap, and with some porting, the intake can perform too.

So it sounds like the intake is more or less just an expensive adapter to let you use some really nice heads.
But i suppose if you are coming from TBI going to TPI its much more than just an adapter and would be a very nice upgrade to have?

If you had a stock L31 vortec truck motor, I don't know that I'd simply swap the TBI out for a TPI. ....that being said, with a little cam, headers/catback etc. etc., you'd have yourself a nice little hot rod, without getting too exotic or expensive.
It's real hard to compare apples to apples on the internet, and everyone has an opinion. What are your goals? Why do you want to do the swap? Most people who do the Vortec TPI swap are real happy. It's a fun street motor with plenty of torque. I think the main drawback of the TPI vortec is that the vortec head swap was made popular because they're so affordable. Naturally people look to them, but then if you want to run bigger cams you have to upgrade the valvetrain, and in the case of that TPI manifold, it's a few hundred bucks more than a plain ole dual plane carb'd set up. ....and.... ....it doesn't flow as well as some of the other multiport set ups that have come out over the years like the Mini/Super/Stealth ram set ups. ....but for a relatively affordable swap....it's still a decent set up. Really depends on your goals, budget, and knowledge with a wrench!

I think vortec heads may be the greatest bang for the buck out there. They are also the greatest example of how to start your budget spiraling out of control. Might as well spend a little more, to upgrade THIS. ...then spend a little more to upgrade THAT. ...then a little more to upgarde THIS. ....then a little more for THAT....and on and on and on.

I have one on my '87 IROC but haven't had the car running yet. Installation was fairly straightforward if you've ever dealt with torquing an aluminum intake down. Only issue I ran into was that the stock oil pressure sender didn't fit right and I had to modify it.

Re: Is anyone running the SD3816 intake (vortec)
I have an old G-van that has been sitting for over 4 years under a covered parking area at my parents lakehouse when the 4L60E lost 3rd and 4th but it has a 383 Vortec head TPI with SLP siamese ported runners and a mild cam in it. I could not keep a 700r4/4L60E in the thing for any time at all. Needless to say all the torque was fun even in a heavy van. It put down 380 hp and 425 tq at the wheels. I actually fired it up for the hell of it this past weekend. Looked it over for mouse damage to the fuel lines and wiring, threw a battery in it, gave it a shot of ether and it roared to life on the first crank. I let it warm up a bit as I aired up the tires. Actually drove it around the property a little. I realized I actually miss driving it.
Edit-
I shot a little video of it. I was suprised the thing even started on 5 year old gas. It had a little 2 cycle oil smoke out of the exhaust (put 10 gallons of fresh gas/oil mix out of the boat in it 5 years ago out when my dad became ill (terminal cancer) and I knew both would sit)but no ticks or knocks and ran super smooth. I am actually headed up there with a trailer to pull it back to the shop and pull the engine for my Express van. The Express needs more power to pull my travel trailer and has a 4L80E that will hold the power.
