406TPI in 82 K10 4x4
Hello everyone.
My 400 SBC that I picked up back in 2015 is finally done and running in my 82 K10 4x4. Originally, I saved this engine for my 89 IROC to do a 406 TPI, but my truck needed an engine. It’s broken in now using a carb and I just need to get fuel tank, pump, and standalone harness to do the TPI conversion.
Anyway, I built the 400 for street use only. Below are the specs.
Edelbrock 3701 DP intake
Stock HEI
Holley 770 street avenger
.030 over 23cc dish ICON pistons
5.7 Rods
XE268-14 cam
1 5/8 long tube headers
Cleaned up GM 113 heads
170 psi compression tested
Approx. 10:1 compression
Built 700R4
3.08 gears
16 inches of vacuum
5 degree Initial timing
20 degree timing (Base+VA)
Number 6.5 power valve
Lighter vacuum secondary springs
Summit 2.25" super turbo true dual exhaust
The truck starts great, idles at 700 rpms in gear but I get a little hesitation when I normally begin to go from a light. I am inclined to believe that the base timing is too low. Problem is that when I increase to 12 degrees, the exhaust gets smokey and stinks. Anyone ever experience smokey and smelly exhaust at 12 degrees?
From now on I am using this TPI forum for all TPI related topics. I am getting tired of explaining to people that I like the stock TPI. I have the stock TPI in my 89 IROC and like it. I don’t have problems with the TPI. Also, I have two EBL Dynamic ECUs because yep, you guessed it, I like the TPI. For street use they’re great. However, too many keyboard commandos out there trying to convince me their opinion matters most. What the hell? Thanks for listening and thanks for having this forum dedicated to TPI.

It’s a expensive tank but real high quality. You might get a blazer tank to work but I think Boyd might be the best option. I shortened a 84 square 16 1/2 inches to put a 57 3100 truck body on so it will be alittle different and bed fill.

WOW, $720. I cannot spend that kind of money. I will use the 87 TBI tank instead. $120 with sending unit.

TBI tank and sending unit then hang a 93 CPI Astro van fuel pump in it. What I did on my TPI 83 G20 van. Same pump still feeds my 450 HP 8.1L flawlessly. Same pump came with the Ramjet 502s.
