Summit cams

Well I originally wanted to go with a comp 280 xfi for my 383 stroker superram build running 195 AFR heads. But the price for cams are looking pretty high. So I seen these cams on summit and they look decent. Tell me what your thoughts are on these.

Re: Summit cams

Made in China. I know people who have used them without any problems, but I wouldn't trust their lifters...

Re: Summit cams

I understand the desire to save money. But for the money invested in a 383 build, I'd hate for a $h!tty cam to essentially ruin the engine....

They're made by either Engine Power Components, or Camshaft Machine Co.They are both American companies not junk at all, but hardly a truly custom ground cam either. I wouldn't be afraid to run one for a budget build. the 8803 cam in a decent 383 with 10-10.5 compression, decent heads exhaust etc should be a solid/easy 450+ tq 430-450 hp +/_ depending on miniram/tpi etc. cam card below, the specs look ok. Personally I would find out if it was a steel core prior to buying it, just based on the cam card those are pretty aggressive lobes. similar specs to Mike Jones ehr71360-72360 lobes on a 112 lsa if used with 1.6 rockers and good springs it will work with ls7 lifters, stock dog bones and spider. think of it as a high lift cc503 with more area under the curve, short seat duration, high lift, decent @.050 numbers. all good things for a street car! Take a look at many of the builds Will aka rcklss drvr has helped with, he has consistently specked similar cams for a lot of 383 gen1 and 383 lt1 builds over on the corvetteforum.com be sure to check cam lobe to rod clearance, and degree it. just aggressive enough that you definitely do not want to install it dot to dot. cam card below. but $250 for ots, vs 450-500 for a custom cam with pressed on cast distributor drive gear is kind of a no brainer, if its your dream car and or you've saved a while to build it a cam isn't the place to try to save 200-300 bucks.

Re: Summit cams

That is a photo of the 8800, stage 1 of these cams, they are all definitely 100% American made. just checked my source ( https://www.speed-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62417 ) definitely a steel core too, not sadi (cheap cast iron), or chilled iron. probably 1050/1055 steel. not as good as better steel billet cores, but not bad at all for a street car.
