series 2 to series 3 carrier

I have a series 2 carrier, and seriers 2 gears are more expensive for em and everywhere I look for gears I find series 3 on ebay and stuff. But what if I switched to a series 3 carrier? Will I then be able to put series 3 gears in my car and that 90$ zexel SLP posi unit?

I ran into this same problem- I series carrier because it had a posi and I bought a 3 series cause it had the disc brakes and 3.42 I wanted-BUT you can't put 2 series gears into a 3 series carrier-looked to Jegs and summit and the price for gears was just stupid and tech lines said nobody made spacers for this swap. Down but not out I searched the net and found a place that makes spacers for alot of applications like ours and 12bolts, etc... Spacer cost me $67.00 shipped to my door. I took the 2 rear ends apart and made the one I wanted (actually just pulled the posi and ring gear did the unbolt and swap) the spacer worked perfectly, right now I have 2.07 60' times at the strip and it's still holding. Remeber ring gear bolts are REVERSE THREADS and you'll have to recheck ring gear bolt torque after about 250 mi.

Being you don't have a posi now, are you changing gears and then adding a posi? Doesn't slp have a 3 series posi? If you change to lower gears[higher numbers] you WILL have more tire spin, without the posi.

70 bucks for the spacer seems like a waste installed on an open rear when a used open 3 series carrier is cheaper. 14 bucks more for 3.73 2 series gears in summit. I would just get the 3.73 2 series gears if you want to keep your current carrier. Or you could pick-up a used open 3 series carrier for cheap from a junkyard. Probably a whole 3.73 gears and 3 series carrier from a junkyard for cheap.

If you have 28 spline axles you could get the 99 dollar torsen posi unit(3 series). The posi unit replaces the carrier so all you would need is some 3.73 3 series gears.

You could also go with the 3.73 2 series gears(new) and get a powertrax streetable locker at a later date if you need the traction. (the locker is installed without removing the gears)

You could also install a used set of 3.73 gears and used 3 series carrier and get a powertrax streetable locker at a later date if you need the traction.
