T-5 rebuild

I would like to know how long it takes to do an average rebuild on a world class t5 tranny and what tools are necisary to get the job done. would a three day weekend be long enough as long as i had all the parts and tools ready to go??????

It is very easy to rebuild your T5. The third gear will need to be removed with a press and press plate. If you don’t have access to a press any shop will be able to do it cheap. It is a real light press fit. The September 94 issue of Car Craft has a real good article on rebuilding a T5. If you don’t have it you can get a video from the link I provided. They are also a good place to order a rebuild kit. If you get the refresh kit you may also want to order all the synchro springs. They deal with Fords also so be specific. Hope this helps.

You need only basic tools. Metric sockets, 3/8 pin punch, snap ring and needle nose pliers, 21mm wrench or a T50 torx bit and a dial indicator. I assure you these are all tools you will use quite often if you work on your car. You make the call on being worth it. A rebuild can cost 300 to 600 bucks if no hard parts are bad. You can do it in a day or two tops for less than 75. If you have a bad shaft or gear you can always order it from the link I provided. Just take your time and keep everything in order. Dont turn a slider around by accident. When it is done you will be surprised at how easy it was. 3 qrt. of Mobil 1 or Red Line synth. ATF and you will be down the road.

Well looks like all I need is the dial indicator and ill have it all. do you use the video to rebuild yours???? I think i will replace 3rd gear just cause i have ground the shihat out of it on many occasions buy im sure you know how it is. What should i do to prep for the rebuild. you know other than down a 12 pack and spend a few nights at the strip club.

No I didn't use the video. I have a B&W T5 service manual I got at a swap meet in Cali. I have talked to a couple of people that have used the video and they said it was very good. The only prep you need is some RTV silicone ( T5's have no gaskets) and 3 qrts. of synth. ATF. the reason for the dial indicator is when you put it together you need to leave the endplay shim out and get a correct measure of shaft endplay. The shim goes between the front bearing retainer and the bearing race. I am sure the video covers this. If your lucky you will be able to use the same shim. If not you will need the correct thickness. Any tranny shop should have one if you need to go thicker or thinner.
