Torque Converter Selection

I will have around $300 - $350 after i get all of my graduation money. Below is what i will be putting in along with the converter and possibly a rebuild of the engine. My question is what converter would best suit the cam and my rearend gearing. My current converter is a dacco i believe and stalls at 1800 but it's a really loose and just revs when i'm in second gear around town. I would like something that hits a little harder also. I had thought about a 3,000 - 3500 stall converter but i didn't know if thats over kill or what brand to go with.

Edit: I thought i changed my signature, oh well...i have the LT4 Hotcam, LT1 Intake, and some sort of headers (undecided yet) and probably soon after all new suspension. Along with ported stock L98 Heads.

3,000-3,500 stall is way too much for a hotcam and will get old on the street quick. Around 2,200-2,500 sounds more realistic for your app.

You say the 1,800 stall wa revving alot? That's actually quite a mild converter.... Are you sure it's not 'slipping'?

A worn band can cause 2nd gear slip.

Question: How does a higher stall converter "get old on the street"? I'll be buying one sooner or later, figured I'd ask now. I'm probably going with a 3000 stall on a 383 with a 224 @ 50 deg cam.

Maybe for a daily driver a big stall might get old but if it's toy then they're cool cause you get peoples attention (the ones that really know what a good sounding car is) Basically-like in my buddies car Street/strip malibu, everytime he leaves a stoplight the thing revs to 3000 rpm before the car starts foward motion, then when your cruising and step on it the convertor will flash to a certain rpm-say 3800 and stay there until the car speed starts to "catch up" then the tach will start to climb. Just be damn sure to run a big cooler to prevent tranny damage as the convertor creates ALOT of slippage which equates into heat and we all know what heat does to a tranny.

Thanks for the great responses guys. A converter gets "old" when your tired and want to get home. heh, most trouble i get is taking off uphill and a cop is behind me. Man that really makes me nervous. Certain inclines seem to disagree with my tires and the stall converter.

As long as the converter matches you set-up..it will be more streetable...the converter will only stall up to 3000...if you dont have the tourqe it wont stall that high...just a note
