Rebuilding a T5...

I'm in the process of rebuilding the T5 in my car. Never done a tranny before so I was just hoping someone could give me a like a step by step on how to go about ripping it apart.

I knocked the pin out that holds the rod that runs along the top of tranny into the shifter block and into the top cover. There appears to be a freeze plug type thing at the front end of the top cover. Do I knock this out? So that i can pull that rod out and remove the top cover? if so after I do that what comes next? Any suggestions would be great thanks.

No, don't knock that plug out. After removing the pin, take out the bolts holding the rear case together.
Pry the rear case back and pull it off (gently) watch the parts in the shifter hole (spring loaded), then remove the bolts in the top cover, pry it up and remove it (gently) moving it slightly to the right side. That's the easy part, the rest requires special tools.

ok thanks... what special tools am I gonna need for this? I'm just looking to do the 1st 2nd gear syncho cause it's grinding. I am pretty mechanically inclined. Is this something I will be able to figure out out to do if I just see how it comes apart? I know that I will need a shop press to press the bearings and stuff back on. Thanks

The only tools needed, and none are special, are a 3/8 ratchet, 10mm 13mm and 15mm socket, 3/8 extension, 3/16 and a 3/8 punch pin, needle nose pliers, snap ring pliers, a dial indicator (to check shaft endplay), a 21mm wrench or a T50 torx bit (you can determine by checking the side of your T5 and whichever shift lever pivot pin you have), and a press plate to remove Third gear. It is a light press fit. You may not even need a press (any shop will do this for a minimal fee). All of these tools you will use frequently if you work on your car. Rebuilding a T5 is a piece of cake.
