Convertor locked all the time?

Pulled the 305, finished gutted emissions and wires that previous owner had started and kept only the ones I needed. Now I just installed the 355 with heavy duration cam in front of my 700r4 that had the Transgo goodies installed. I bought a Coan lock-up convertor off E-bay (yeah I know, but it was only $200-read on) that the guy says was a 2800 stall the thing measured 9.5" so I thought I did good. Installed motor/tranny got it broke in and went to put it in gear Dropped from 1200 rpm in park to 500-600 in gear and it really pulls the motor down. My factory convertor I could stall to 1000rpm before it would push and this one only goes to 1500 and flashes about 2200 but I need the damn thing to slip at idle in gear and I'm thinking some how the wiring might have a default to lock the convertor if everything is not hooked up correctly (all the factory garbage they came with) and since all I needed was the starter/alternator wires-plus the plug in to the tranny maybe something in the tranny is telling it to lock-up all the time. How do you test for this? Other than boggin it way down when you put it in gear the car runs like a raped ape and should have respectable numbers come Saturday night. The tranny shifts great auto and manually but it just seems like the convetors locked up. And if it is is there anyway to by-pass it then put in a switch after I hit second gear to lock it back up again?

the tranny is not locked up, if it was it would stall as soon as you put it in gear.

I think you have a point cause wifes minivan had tranny problem that when you put it in gear it would die-ended up being some code that locked the convertor up-I guess I'm just trying to find another answer instead of realizing I got the shaft and have to rip the damn thing apart again.
