rear end questions
rear end questions
Howdy all,
I have an '89 firebird w/ a stock rear end (open diff, 2.73 gear...), however I recently swapped a T5 into the car, which came w/ a 3.08 gear set stock, because my rear end is higher it makes the car crawl from a stand still, so I need to replace my rear end gears. However, I would also like some form of limited slip rear end, because the open is unacceptable, (Especially in the rain). However, I really do not want to mess up by spending lots of money in parts I can't use or cause problems, so I was wondering a few things:
Everybody says to just "buy a used rear end", because trying to change the diff. and the gears is supposed to be mroe trouble than its worth. (especially since I have an '89 so I don't knwo how many splines my rear is). If I bought a rear end w/ a limited slip unit in it, how easy is it to install? The gearing that I want, would be 3.43 or 3.73, which is common in 4th gen cars. if I find a used 4th gen rear end is that a bolt-in? Will the torque arm line up and everythign? How a/b my wheels, will they still bolt right on? If this is not the case, then Iw ould rather not get a 3rd gen rear end, because I'd rather not use really old parts, so could I just buy a posi and gears?
Sorry for all the questions, I've just been saving them up for awhile and decided to finally spit them all out
Thanks for reading this far!
