changes to early

why does it change gear so quick??
why does the car change gear to early when running at normal temp and not when cold?
It's a 5litre with 4 speed auto & overdrive.
If accelerating lightly it changes gear way to early but when running cold its fine? any ideas? gears change ok in all other aspects. could it do with an oil change???
