gear ratio

I would like to increase the gear ratio on my 91 Camaro RS 305 engine M5. I don't know what kind of "carrier" I have. I am wondering if it is possible to change it to a 4.1 ratio and if so how?

Thanks

all you need to know is what ratio you have then buy a new gear set. they'll be listed by ratio and to fit a carrier with a ratio numerically higher than x:xx or lower then x:xx. look in the jegs catalog at richmond gears and you'll get a good idea of how they're listed

Axle/Gears: 3.42 Richmond
Stock gear ratio for a T-5 is 3.08 which is a TWO series differential.

Anything gear above a 3.23 ratio requires a THREE series diff.

It's a series 2 carrier ----->

The 91 RS V8 T5 only came with a series 2 carrier from the factory .... (3.08 or 2.73 gears).

Your best option is to buy a used rear end. Look at it like this,......

At least $200 + for new gears & $200 + for installation. & what you have is a "one wheel wonder" rear end with drum brakes and good gears. (If your car is not already POSI)

OR

You can buy a good used series 3 ( 3.23 or higher gear ) POSI rear end with DISK brakes and proportioning valve for about $300-500 depending on if it needs to be shipped or not. If you can't turn a few nuts yourself to install it than figure on another $100-200 for installation........

But look at what you have !!!!!

You can even have a forth gen POSI Disk rear in your car - the only difference is an additional 1" or so on each axle which will make the back tires spread out a bit more. Those things sell on E-bay for $400 or so all the time....
