that happened to me once, i never found out whar really happened, some say i burned up the 2-4 band, or the 3-4 clutches, others say it could have been some crud stuck where it shouldn't be. all i know is the fluid was not burnt, and the pan was clean when we pulled it to see if any pieces were in there.

sorry i of no help but i am curious what the rest of the board thinks

SAME EXACT thing thats wrong with my 91 700r4, good r,1,2, drive is out, and 4th I have to rev engine (v6) to 4200-4500 rpm for it too kick in. I tryed adjusting the tv cable, new filter, new fluid, no go. I fixing to send it to shop and pay 700 bux to have it rebuilt Thought I would let you know I its not just your car, I think its a 700r4 "thing" BTW 165,000 miles on it.

The same thing has happened to my 700R4 89 Formula. I have 1st, and 2nd just fine, but i have to rev the engine to over 4000rpm to get it to shift to drive. I have no OD at all.

I'm hoping there is something i can do short of rebuilding it, though. If there is nothing i can do, i may opt for a TH350, as i wont be driving it everyday for much longer and the TH350 is cheaper.

The 3-4 clutches are the weak point in this transmission (as you have noticed). This is the most common failure on this unit. When you lose the 2-4 band, you have 1st & 3rd, when you lose the 3-4 clutches, you lose 1st & 2nd. It is rare that a valve in the valve body, or the governor is stuck, etc., that will cause these things to happen. On my units the 3-4 clutch failure rate is zero, (no comebacks with 3-4 clutch failure in over 5 years) We use the Borg Warner Hi-Energy clutches, (7 clutches for road racing and 8 for drag racing or Heavy Duty), the Corvette servo, .500 main boost valve, special pressure regulator valve, Kolene steels when necessary, the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit or HD Shift kit, Trans-Go HD forward & direct return springs, and the 3-4 clutch clearance at .040 - .055. I have found no better setup. This is only a part of what needs to be done to make this unit last, but as you see it is a big part. If I can be of help let me know?

1st and 2nd gears are fine. Only shifts into drive when rev'd over 4000rpm and then NO overdrive.

I'm in southern California, trans comes with a one year warranty, price on the Street/Strip or Road Race 700R4 is $1395.00 outright (good for over 500+ horsepower). The HD 700R4 sells for $1275.00 outright.
