Today I bought a 700-R4 form a junkyard 1984 Camaro with a LG4 305. Is there any way to see if the tranny works before I do my swap. And if I can't how much would it be for me to have it professionally rebuilt, or can I do it myself, I've never done anything like this before, are there books to help me out. Thanks.

Rebuilding an auto trans is an absolute nightmare that requires special tools. There isn't much of a price difference between a performance rebuild and a regular rebuild at most shops, so get the BW sprags, clutches and bands. It's going to be in the $1000 range give or take a couple hundred. There is no way to know if it works unless it runs on a dyno or in a vehicle. I'd say it probably needs a rebuild anyway. If you put any kind of power to an old tranny and abuse it, it will fail. Also somewhere in '84 they changed the input shaft from a 27 spline to a 30 spline. If you have the 27 look into getting it converted to a 30 spline. Sometimes the Corvette servo is needed for performance rebuilds as well.
