early shifting

I have a 88 350 tbi(auto). The only thing on it that isn't stock is the flowmaster exaust. I let one of my friends drive my car and he was telling me how it shifts to early so you cant really get on it. He has a 305 87 iroc w/ hypertech chip, and many other mods. Does the hypertech chip change the shifting times? Or is there somthing wrong with my car? Thanks

Check your shift cable. Push the adjusting button in and try moving the square plastic thingy with teeth on it about half way from where it is back towards the firewall. Under light to moderate throttle, you want it to shift at about 2000rpm, 1st to second. Keep moving it back until it does. When it's right, you'll feel some real snappy shifts. If it's all the way back and you're still shifting early, better start saving for a rebuild. Good luck!

go to the tranny board and do a search for tv cable + adjustment. TransFixLeo's method works quite nicely. Your tranny should provide early shifts at low throttle for fuel economy and transmission life. If it downshifts when you get on it then i wouldnt worry about it. Fiddling w/ the cable can cause hard shifts and delayed shifts when the trans is cold.
