When I let my TH350 trans shift itself from 1st to 2nd it shifts fine (5000rmp-ish) maybe a little less. When I manually shift it out at 6000rmp it takes for ever to shift and it is really soft. My friend said it may be that the vaccume drops too much at the higher rpms and the tranny doesnt have enough to make a firm shift. Is this true and if so how can i fix it. Also how can I move my (automatic) shift point to a higher rpm. With my new motor setup I would like to shift out around 5800rpm.

Automatic wide open throttle shift point is raised by lightening the governor weights.
The vacuum modulator gives line pressure a boost when it has little or no vacuum, first try adjusting the modulator screw clockwise, this will increase modulator pressure and make the shifts alittle more firm and later.

If the carb is too small, you might be getting some vacuum at the higher rpms.

I would buy a 2800/3000 stall converter for your car.
