Help! 4L60E Rebuild

Help! 4L60E Rebuild
Hopefully you guys can help me out, because i have a major problem.
First off, is there ANY reason at all that this trans would not shift into 3-4 (other than the clutches)?
If it is the clutches, how hard is it to replace them?
I don't know much about automatics because I have only owned one.
A proffessional rebuild is out of the question at this time, and I'm prepared to give the rebuild a try(with the help of friends and a manual), but I was really hoping someone here could help me out or have any advice before i tear into it.....
