v6 700r4 same as v8 700r4?
v6 700r4 same as v8 700r4?
I recently purchased a 87 v6 w/ an auto tranny, according to some web sites it has a 700r4, if that is correct, is it the same 700r4 that is used in the v8's, or is it a different spline like in the aftermarket ones you can buy?
And if it is the same will it bolt right up or will i have to change some parts.

i believe the internals are identical
HOWEVER
i KNOW that it will not bolt up, the v6 and V8 bolt patterns are 100% different and nobody makes an adapter

Engines are often classified by the bellhousing pattern. V8s have a 90° bellhousing. Small V6s have a 60° bellhousing. As a result, the the bellhousings will not bolt up, and the bellhousing is not replaceable (its part of the case). Most of the internals are the same. But w/ the 60° bellhousing, a smaller torque converter is needed to fit. The 60° TC meausers 245mm vs the 90°'s 298mm converter. Because of this different converter, the input shaft (input housing, the shaft is not servicable seperatly) is diffferent. Other than that, not much different. But if your looking for a replacement tranny for that 2.8L, you NEED the 60° bellhousing, and if you are looking to swap in a V8, you will NEED the 90° bellhousing transmisison.

a 700-r4 out of a v6 has less clutches than one out of a v8 and i think the gear ratios might be different also.....although i could be mistaken...
Some of the V6s (I don't remember if it was all or just some) had five 3-4 clutch frictions instead of the normal six.
As for the transmission gear ratios, they NEVER EVER changed. From 1982-1993, the ratios have always remained the same.

I don't think he was bustin' your *****
For the most part, the internals are the same, even down to the "oil slingered" rear planetary. It was at one time "rumored" that only High Output trannies got them, and that may have been so on early models, but during a certain year, they all got them. Same goes for the Foward Sprag assembly, specifically, the overrun hub. It was an old wives tale that you could tell a "HO" sprag by the number of lube holes, but in '87, ALL hubs had 12 lube holes. Except for the input housing, all the hard parts are identical. I have often scrapped V6 trannies as a source for spare parts
