700R4 or a 460LE

OK guys I thought that when Chevrolet switched from the L98 to the LT1 that the transmissions where switched from the 700R4 to the 460LE. Is this true one of my friends tried to tell me that his '94 Z/28 has a 700R4 in it stock.

Please someone clarify this so I can help find him a tranny (his is blown).
Thanks, Garrett

ok, heres the deal. The 700r4 and the 4L60E are physically the same transmission, except that the valve body on the 4L60E is electronically controlled, in place of the TV cable used on the 700R4. This allows the computer to control the up/down shifts. If the transmission has a TV cable it is a 700R4. I believe that the '93 and newer camaro/firebirds all had a 4L60E, but you can check to be sure.

So what would have to be done to put a 700R4 where a 460LE was?? could a 700R4 be modified to become essentially a 460LE?
Thanks, Garrett

the physical dimensions are the same, so it would bolt right in. The problem is that one is computer controlled the other is not. The best thing to do is go figure out which one he has (4l60E more than likely) and replace it with the same model from a '93 or newer f-body. Both transmissions are plentiful, so it wouldn't be cost effective to swap a 700R4 in place of the 4L60E, since you would have to purchase a TV cable and install it, and then have the computer reprogrammed in order to avoid trouble codes and/or driveability problems. Good luck!
