700r4 woes, continued...

Hello again,

Ok, Last time i posted here it was about my 700r4 and its lack of shifting out of 1st gear. I was offered advice to check the governer and the plastic gear to make sure they wern't stripped. Well, i yanked that and the gear/goveroner looked like it was ok. No wear at all on the gear, and the govener valve moved freely, the weights and springs were all in tact.

Since then, i figured what the heck and took it to a tranny shop. I had them 'look' at it, and their advice to me was have the thing rebuilt, which they quoted me a price of about $800, an of course that didn't include any parts they might have to replace. Now, i don't know much about tranny repair and such, but i would at leaast think they would know what went intitally wrong and have an idea on what would be wrong to beging with, so i'm questioning doing anything with this shop. I think they just told me what would make them the most money.

As for the problem i'm having, i took the car to the corner store, and when i left it wouldn't shift out of 1st. Prior to this happening.. it did seem like it had some hesitation when shifting out of that gear. I recently did some more post searching, and came across the idea of a sticking valve. From some reading in the diagnosis section of the GM service manuel, i'm wondering if it is possible/likely that i have a sticking 1-2 valve.

Well, my questions are: Are 700r4's know to have sticking valves and such? Does my logic seem sound? How difficult is it to remove a valve (it seems like after you drop the valve assembly out of the tranny you just have to push a roll pin and slide out the internals... right?) And finally where is a good place to get a good replacement if it is sticking?

Well, if anyone can help, i would appriciate it.

Thanks,

Joker

It sounds to me like the Throttle Valve is stuck. How many RPMs have you taken it up to? If it is indeed the Throttle Valve stuck, then you will just about have to redline it to make it finally shift into second. When it does shift, it will be very hard (tranny thinks you are at WOT). When this valve gets stuck, I have had moderate success tugging on the cable a few time and reseting the cable (theoreticly it shouldn't work, but it has).
To fix it for good, you can get the TransGo kit. It has dual helper spings and a self cleaning valve design. I have had LOTS of stock 700's do this, and NONE after installing the TransGo.

I've taken it all the way up to the beginning of yellow, but didn't want to take it any higher then that. I mean... if i do redline the engine and it still doesn't shift i don't think that would be too healthy for the engine. I'll probably get the TransGo kit anyway; even if this tranny is bad i have another 700r4 from a parts Formula i have in the back yard.

Thanks for the input.
