Can someone help my ID my transmission?
It's a 700R4, obviously.
There's a big yellow sticker on the driver's side bellhousing that has a barcode and says "9Y6" on it.
Then just forward of the governer cover, these numbers are stamped onto a pad:
12 1742 0950
I've looked in my books but can't make any sense out of it. Anybody have a clue? This is out of my '82 Corvette, but the trans has been rebuilt at least twice (once by previous owner, and once by me - at a shop that is.)
I definitely plan on rebuilding this myself. The engine AND transmission came out today.. should be fun!

D'OH! Answered my own question. Was looking on the wrong place for the ID numbers. Needed to be the pad on the passenger side near the rear.
Apparently 9 = built in '82. Y6 = model #
The numbers on the other side are:
9Y6 175D - 496 .... with NS stamped below the 496 (which I assume means Night Shift.

You are correct. 1982 700R-4s had a three digit code, starting with the number 9. From 1983 and up, the code had 4 digits, and the first one being the model year.
9Y6 = 1982
3YPM = 1983
4YPM = 1984
etc...
Generally, the second character indicated the Platform the transmission was installed in, however, w/ F-bodies, it could either be an "F" or a "Y".
2SHM = 1992 S-10, Sonoma, Blazer, Jimmy (2WD)
1FUM = 1991 Camaro, Firebird
etc...
