Used gears yes or no.
Used gears yes or no.
I Can get some 3.42s from my friend for free which is cool but is it really a good Idea to re-use gears. They have been sitting around a while so we can really check how they were set up or anything like that if that is necessary.
Also Im still debating whether or not we (me and the guy w/the gears) should do it or if I should have a local guy at his shop do it for $150 (he did a good job on my friends stang).
$$ is definately a problem since this is my girlfriends car and we have so much work to do on it.
This rear end probably wont last forever since we will put a healthy 406sb in it and parts will fly I bet. But If It can hold up (axles and girdle later?) that would be great.
Also what other parts should I be looking at getting for the install. Ive got the take-off Posi from SLP sitting here and it has some bearings on it which look good. What else will I need? one of the kits for $100(hope not)
Also if anyone has links to a site with gear install instructions that would help a lot.

Same here... I've done a few that way.
You absolutely positively need an install kit unless you're willing to totally ghetto it and take the big chance. Get the Ratech kit from your local speed shop, or Summit or Jeg's, that's about $100; it has all the bearings & shims and stuff you need. $150 for a guy who knows what he's doing and has a track record is a pretty good price.

what year car is this going in...if its an 87 or older you'll need to get the 28 spline axles for the SLP unit...88 and newer have the 28 spline already
Its a 91
Thanks
The guy does quite a few and he should have some shims laying around.
As far as bearings go can they be bought individually from a part store? My Girlfriend works at one so we get a nice discount anyways.
Im still tempted to do it myself because I just want to learn. But I guess that in all honesty I dont really have the time or the right tools and she does not have the money for me to screw it up.
The gears were factory from a 6cyl car (forget year 88-91 im pretty sure)
These will work on the 3 series SLP unit right? I asked on here before and everyone says yes but I could use a bit of reinforcement.
Thanks guys.

Yes you can buy bearings individually.
Yes they will work.
Buy the kit and return it if you don't use it. There's nothing worse than disabling your daily driver and then discovering there's some one little stupid thing you forgot that keeps it from going back together, except maybe re-using something that breaks later on and tears up something expensive (like gears or nice posi carriers).
There's times and places to try to minimize; this probably isn't a good choice of one.
