please help

I recently noticed some tranny fluid leaking out of the extension housing seal so i thought hey no problem ill do that when i do the front u-joint. I read the chiltins book and it says just to use a small pry tool. Ive been prying at it for last 2 hours and its just getting mangled. On the inside there seems to be a little lip that maybe locks into the housing. Does anyone have any tips for getting this seal out? i just keep mangling it more and more, almost to the pot where im bout to try to tack weld a slide hammer to it n go to town. Also i noticed when i began prying i found a spring that was disconnected on one end right by the output shaft. i pulled it out because it wasnt connected to anything just floating in there, its about 6 inchs long im wonder WTF it is? If anyone could please help me i would appreciate it.

I take a chisel and tap the edge of the seal in towards the center. The seal is pressed into the tailhousing, so the friction between the outside of the seal and the inside of the tailhousing holds it in there tight, so by hitting on the edge will push the outside of the seal away from the tailhousing allowing it to pop out easier. Just don't damage the tailhousing, its made of aluminum.

As for the spring, just throw it away. Its part of the old seal, and the new seal will have a new spring. It just keeps tension on the lip of the seal that rides on the shaft.
