SLP posi and 3.42 gears
Can anyone tell me the link to the slp posi unit? I heard they were only about $90. Also, can anyone tell me about their experiences with SLP gears? I was wondering how well they worked. If they are pretty crappy, what would be a good set to buy? I'm looking for the 3.42 gears, and hopefully I can stay with my 2 series carrier. Thanks in advance guys.

I'm sure they are just fine, Richmonds are good too.

3.42's sound good. A posi unit is the carrier. The SLP unit is a 3 series carrier--just get 3 series gears and you will be fine.
Also, you will need 28 spline axles--required by the SLP posi unit.

SLP web is www.slponline.com and you be out of LUCK looking for 3:42 gears for a 2-series carrier. They will not work and the same for SLP Limited Slip.
The SLP Posi is the carrier, so you will be chunking the 2 series in the trash, unless you need an unusual paperweight. The SLP gears are OEM replacements (GM Gears). I have both the Torsen carrier (SLP "posi") and the 3.42 gears and they work rather well.
Like mentioned before, the SLP carrier uses 28 spline axles, something your '86 did not come with. You will need to located some 28 spline axles from an '89-92 thirdgen, or you can order some new ones. I bought a pair of Moser axles for $240 (approx) When you call them, tell them what its going into, but you NEED 28 splines.

Oh and just one more question, are the axle splines (28 i need
) the same splines measured for TCs? The B&M TC I want is for 30 splines, so how would that work? I didn't even see a TC with 28 splines, I only saw 27 and 30. I'm probably wrong, but the splines are on two different ends right? The TC attaches to the tranny, and so the spline axles shouldn't be a factor at all, right? Thanks for the responses guys.

No.
Converters don't go in the rear end, so they don't care about what kind of axles you have. They're concerned with the transmission.
You need to either find some axles out of a 90-92 third gen F car, or go to the aftermarket. I'd recommend Superior axles, because unlike custom axle companies like Moser for what you need, they heat-treat the axles after they've been splined, so you end up with a stronger product. It's a better way to go when you need a stock replacement configuration. The "custom" companies are the way to go when you need something that doesn't exist as a stock setup. Price is about the same.

Well Z28DJP1987, I am going to get new posi and gears and now axles, and then I am going to get the new TC and tranny. Then I am getting a new manifold and cam, doing an engine and carb rebuild, and getting some lowering springs. It's about $3,000 in parts without shipping and installation. I'll be installing and doing everything except the tranny and carb rebuild. The carb will be sent to a carb shop and the heads are going to be ported at a garage too. So i know what i want to do. After working as a temp this summer I should have enough money. So I should get stock axles instead of stock. Ok, got it. Thanks.

One last question, what rear axle assy and ratio do you have now??? Example 9-bolt or 10-bolt and rato 2:77 or 3:23. I see you posted 2:73 with a ??? mark.

There were two sets of axles on Ebay a couple of days ago. The same guy had both sets and only sold one set to another person here on TGO. You might email him and see if he still has the other set. He wanted $69.95 plus $20 for shipping per set.

the SLP gears are good gears. the richmonds are good too, but i heard they are noisy. i actually know somebody that had richmonds, and was so annoyed with the whine that came from the back of the car that they got them replaced with SLPs.
i know, you will say that this is due to installation, bu the guy that installed them is one of teh best around. it happens a lot with richmonds from what i hear. but, they are a good quality gear.

Richmonds are stronger, but that can come with some noise. I've installed many sets and some do whine a bit. The 3.73's I have in my 82 are quiet. All of you decisions need to be based on what you want to 'do' with the car.

Well the question marks are because my car's rpo says that I have 2.73 open, but I had a posi until it broke at englishtown. Someone must have changed it over to posi before me and I don't know if they chaged the gears too. They are reall low though, either 2.73 or 2.56. My one friend thinks they are 2.56 because at 70 mph in D the rpms are about 2550. So I am not sure what I have, I still haven't checked
But the gears that I have whine really loud between 50 and 70 mph. It can get annoying but I am used to it. Also, my tranny bangs under hard acceleration because one of the mounts is a little loose. I can't wait to be back home for break to fix that and look more into the parts I want. I have the stock 10 bolt 7.5" rear, with 30 spline axles. So with the SLP 3.42 gears and posi and 28 spline axles, I could care less what I have now. It will be gone by this time next year anyway

if you have stock axles you have 26 spline pieces of trash.
also... i got a question... i was thinking about doing somthing similar, but i have 3.23 gears in my car now... if i switch to 28 spline axles and the SLP posi will i need to get new gears... i would think that 3.42 gears are optimal, but a switch from 3.23 to 3.42 doesnt seem worth it in my eyes if i can keep my gear set i will.

Smurfn-No you will not have to get new gears. The zexel is a "3" series carrier meaning it works with 3.23, 3.42, and 3.75 gears. It may work with lower gears, but I have no experience with anything lower than 3.75's. So keep your gears and get the zexel. You will be glad you did!!

Does anyone have 4.10s in their cars? And if so how do you like them?

Yes, but they were in a 79 Z28 4-speed. They were fine as far as I was concerned, except that the motor had no nads.... it was one of those magnificent 180 HP 350s. I put a few cross-country miles on it that way.

usually you dont wana go into overdrive no matter what unless you HAVE to. going to 4.11's in a really high MPH/HP car will require going into overdrive or having a really high REDLINE like 6800 RPMS to get into the 125~ mph area. with 3.73s you are more likelly to finish in 3rd than overdrive without such a high redline.
