Axle/Gears: 3.42, 3.42
rear gear change

Can someone give me a site or some advice on changing the rearend gears in a 92 10 bolt, and putting a SLP posi unit in.

look in your manual. i think bernard still has a how to on his site sethirdgen. good chance you won't have the tools to do it, since it requires some fairly specialized stuff.

I'll update it one of these days w/ better information. I did that article about two years ago. I have since started using the GM approved "bent shim" method to determine proper carrier shims. I find it much easier. I'd also like to show how to properly use the pinion depth guage for those who have access to one.

The key to doing the rear properly is to have an array of shims so that you can get it just right, and have a beam style torque wrench that can measure up to 50 in/lbs. I highly reccomend getting a Ratech kit. It comes w/ shims, bearings, seals, new ring gear bolts, etc... If it does not come w/ gear marking compound (you NEED this stuff!), you can get it from GM, Part Number: 1052351
