Hurst shifter questions
I bought a Hurst shifter for my dads 92Z28 for his Bday. I bought it used and it didn't come with the 4 mounting bolts that are mentioned in the instructions I found online. (Link to online instructions here)The instructions say I should not reuse the bolts that were used for the stock shifter. Anyone have a clue why? Or what is special about the new ones that hurst supplies? Are they something I can pick up at a decent hardware store or the like?
The reason you shouldn't / can't use the old bolts is because the stock shifter base was just stamped sheet metal (~ 1/8" or so thick) whereas the Hurst shifter base is much, much thicker (~ 1/4" ) There won't be enough thread to hold down the new shifter. IIRC, the bolt you need is 10 mm fine thread (13 mm wrench head) Just bring the bolt you have down to local hardware store and get one just like it but about 1/4" longer.
Clean the old RTV off of the mounting plate on the tranny, put a thin but even coat of black Permatex RTV and let it get slightly tacky (about 5 min. or so) and put the new shifter on. Tighten down the 4 bolts evenly (cross-wise pattern) to the specs in the manual (I think it was about 15 ft-lbs) Do not overtighten!! The case is fairly soft alum. and will strip pretty easily!
Good luck and hope this helps!

It makes sense that they were longer. Just wish that they had mentioned it in the instructions you know? Its common sense really, but I don't want to risk screwing up my Dads Z28.
Thanks
