Why wont any shops do this?
My transmission, the rare
(never rebuilt) 82 700R4 (not original to my car mind you) is starting to get me worried about the cluches, its not slping at all and is in real nice shape considering all the goodies put into it. Anyways I talked to a few shops to see how much it would cost me to have them replace the clutch packs/steels and they wont do it!
I'm getting a new tq converter and I think this would be a good preventitive cost saving measure since the transmission is comming out but all the shops told me no they wont do it that way, it's full rebuild $600-700 or nothing. I could do it my self but I hate messing with automatics. What gives??????????????????

Because replacing the clutches basically requires rebuilding the transmission entirely anyways. It would be insane to pull the thing apart, replace the clutches, then slap it together with the old seals and O-rings.

One shop said they use to just replace the clutches for people but they ran into problems. I just dont want a local shop rebuilding my transmission I'd like to keep thier grubby figers out of it as much as possible. Ive only seen one tranny come out like it should from the local shops and that out of hundreds and it was a POS C4.

You know 'SSC' I would worry more about the seals then the clutches with tons of miles on it.
...and when you think about it, it's nothing to do the seals, and even bushings for the matter if your going in to do all the clutches.
It's like not replacing the bearings when changing out a crankshaft. I mean there right there, and thats the same with these trannie seals. There basicly exposed when pulling out the clutches.
Even if they did just change the clutches only, the price might only be 25 dollars cheaper.
