Take off the 9 or 10 bolts, open it up, look at it with your eyes.

A posi is verrrrrry noticably different from a open diff. And there are actually numbers stamped into the side of the ring gear, that if divided into each other will reveal the ratio.

"good" gear ratio is very subjective (what is good for me might not be good for you) That will be your call.

Ok, if you want a personal opinion (doesn't really matter, I'm going to spew it anyway)... What I did was bought a generic disc rear, didn't matter what year (ended up being '85) brought it to local Ring & Pinion shop with rebuild kit (Summit ~ $95) bought NEW Zexel-Torsen posi (Yes, they do make them in 26-spline) new US Gear 3.73's which is what mine had at the time.

Had them do a complete set up. I also bought AndyZ28's 1LE rear disc upgrade kit, and installed it myself in 1 afternoon.

Yes, I've now got about $1,200 total into this rear, (not including the beer during the install!) but it will light the tires aaallll ddaaaaayyyyyy looonnnnggg!! AND stop on a dime to boot.

You will definitely get whatever you pay for. Question is: Do you want it done right, or done right now?

If all you want to do is throw in whatever happens to be laying around then you should at least look for:

Drum: any year
Disc: 89+ (IIRC)

Automatic tranny: 3.42:1 or 3.08/3.23:1
Manual 3.73:1 or 3.23/3.42:1
(First ratios will provide max acceleration but not best gas mileage, second ones will increase mileage, you should be able to figure out the rest)

Lastly, there were 9-bolt rears for these cars too, and they WERE stronger, but very little aftermarket support, and what there is, is very expensive compared to the 10-bolts.

Your call...

i got a 9 bolt for $300 and it's held up great. it has 3.45's amd I love it. count the teeth on the ring and pinion and divide them together. that's your ratio. you should open the ccover anyway . be sure to put in limited slip additive when you put it together and fill up to fill hole/
