t-5 rebuild
t-5 rebuild
I'm rebuilding a world class t-5 tranny, I have already taken the main body apart so i can reach the gears. They have absolutely no wear on them, I think it was rebuilt just before I got it out of a junk car. The only problem is that the front bearing is loose, I can get a full bearing and seal kit for $60.
But...how do I clean it? Do I use degreaser myself, or should i send it off to a machine shop to hot tank it, ect? Do I need to replace the syncros, anyway, too?
I have a manual on the disassembly and replacement of EVERY LITTLE PART of the t-5. But, and hints and advice would be helpful. I know there is most likely 50 threads that have all my answers, but I CANNOT SEARCH ARGH!!!!
And I dont have the time right now to go line by line.
Thanks for the help guys!!

According to the T5 rebuild video I have, they recommend taking the case, extention housing & shafts to a shop with an automatic parts cleaner. Looked like a big dishwasher to me.
I would rebuild the internals while you have it apart. That way you'll have piece of mind when you drive it. Hope this helps.

I was trying to avoid having a shop to too much work to it...especially since if they wash it, and I took it home it would get dirty in the process, and it has to be IMACULATE on the inside. I want this tranny running perfect. Any idea on the price of a rebuild for a t-5 from a shop?

For tips and tricks on rebuilding this trans get the video from www.hanlonmotorsports.com for $17.
As far as it getting dirty coming back from the machine shop, I'm not sure why you are saying this. Put the cleaned parts in garbage bags for storage until you need them. And I agree the trans needs to be clean going back together, but don't get too paranoid about it. I went through mine with the hanlon video and only had the main case cleaned at a shop for $10. Everything esle was done in a parts washer and it turned out just fine. I've got several thousands miles on it now and it works shifts very well.
I would agree that since you already have it apart you should go through the entire trans with a rebuild kit for around $160. And if you have never rebuilt a T5 before, don't try to put it back together without the video. There are specific clearances and bearing pre-loads that you need to set that isn't explianed very well in a book, but is covered in great detail in the video. Hanlon also sells rebuilt kits that are very complete, and the most important thing there kits come with is the the support behind them. I had a question about my trans and got a call back on a saturday answering my questions. You don't get that kind of support from an Ebay kit.

Ok, sweet. I wanted to do it myself, just needed that boost there! I'll get the video then, and follow its instructions with the full rebuild kit. It just might be awhile before I get that t56... better have the t5 in top shape while I can do it easily.
