700r4...It's All Good....Maybe?

Just need the opinion/advice of those who've walked before me...

I can't help myself but treat the auto like it's a manual...now, nothing insane, hell, even racing I often rely on good ol' "D"...but things such as getting of a highway, dropping from OD to D to slow up the car a bit...a manual habit I'm putting to the automatic. Now, I ask of you - is this a problem..? Is it really that bad of a thing to do..? Any thoughts are appreciated.

as far as i know, downshifting an automatic is BAD. it just puts too much strain on it to handle, its not built like a manual. on the other hand, upshifting it from 1 to drive on your own, as long as your not redlining 1st and 2nd gear, is perfectly fine. im no tranny expert but this is what i have been told.
