454flexpate questions
I just put a 454 in my 85. The flex dont bolt up to tthe converter for my 700r4. Do I just need to get a different converter?
If so any way to change converter with out dropping tranny?
Charlo
EDIT: 454 from 89k30 into an 85

not 100% sure but i believe all you may need is bolt holes in the flex plate and not a new converter. if there's a way to r&r a converter without dropping the trans it's a very well kept secret.

You need a different flex plate, not a different converter. There might not be a flex plate like you need if that motor has a 1-piece rear main seal like small blocks of the same year do. You might have to get a 86-up 305/350 one "unbalanced" to the 454 balance spec.

I suppose you could do that.... but it would be a heck of alot less trouble and expense to just change out the flex plate. The 400 will bolt up to the block, same as the 700; but you may still have flex plate issues, and the drive shaft will need modification, and you'll need a torque arm mount, and a whole batch of other little swapover things.
I'd recommend just dealing with the flex plate. It's really not very difficult or expensive at all.

BTW, a cool little trick is to put long bolts in the tranny to engine holes, then you can slide tranny back just enough to get to fly wheel with a ratchet.
