Solid crush collar - starting thickness

I'm installing my new gears and was wondering how many shims most people needed to set the preload when using a solid crush collar. This would give me a good starting point.

I just put all the shims in at first, and go from there. I've usually ended up with about 3 of the shims in there of various sizes, out of the total pack.
