Spline in rear axle?

Spline in rear axle?
Can anyone tell me what year they switched to a 28 spline rear axle?? I know a 86 has 26 but I dont know what a 89 has. Thanks

89 is the changeover year. Nobody can predict what you'll find. From people's experience on this board, it seems about 75-80% of them are 26 spline.

If you have a 9-bolt 89 rear you will have the 28 spline axle shafts. Otherwise the change over was during the 89 model run and depending on what GM had in the inventory of various rears with the 26 splines shafts. Very hit & miss except for the 9-bolt.
