Difference between flywheel and flexplate

The two common function for both of them is they transfer engine torque to the transmission, and both have geared edges so the starter can turn the motor over.
They both attach to the crankshaft. The flywheel has a smooth surface for the clutch to apply against.

BTW: I've seen flexplates fly, & flywheels flex - It just isn't very pretty. This is why they enforce 'scatter' shields & 'flak' jackets on the bell housings in some forms of racing. ( key words -> scatter & flak
