Side axles?? Which is which...
Ok.. I know that this is going to sound stupid but hey I'm learning
First... I need to replace my drivers side - side axle on my 1987 IROC, it has the B/W 9 bolt posi rear end (3.27) and it's bent
Ok... couple of questions...
1. Will any side axle out of any B/W rear end (3rd Gen F-Body of course) fix me up? Does it matter if it's the passenger side or drivers side.. I am thinking that one of them are longer than the other...
2. If one of these axles are longer which one is it? Is the Drivers side longer than the passenger side or is it vice versa?
3. I know that a side axle out of a 10 bolt will not fit, completely different animal.. but does it matter if the B/W is posi or not?
What I have been told is this... only a drivers side-side axle out of a 9 bolt posi rear end will work....anything else will not work...
I need to know because I am in negotiations to buy a side axle and I need to know what I am asking for and what the seller actually has!
TIA!

I do not have any experience with the 9 bolt but I would have to say stick with the drivers side one. I am unsure if they have different lengths but I have seen somewhere that you want keep the axle on the right side as it was designed for. It said something about twisting of the axle and if you put a passenger side axle in on the drivers side it will be rotating 99% of its life in the opposite way it started out its life. This can cause the axle to fatigue. If it is brand new and it is the same length I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just don't try it with a used one. Hopefully that helps.

only a driver side axle(the shorter one) out of a 9 BOLT will work. since you have discs get a disc brake axle. the disc axle flange on a 9 bolt is smaller than a drum axle flange.
BTW - if you can't find one, shoot me an email. if have one laying around somewhere. (got spares just in case

9 bolts have different length axle for the passenger vs driver side. Hence you need a the correct side.

Thanks!
Thanks for the replies.. I knew someone on Thirdgen would know!
I have learned something new... drivers side axle is shorter than the passenger side and the disc brake flange is smaller than the drum brake flange!
Cool...
I will see if the guy I am dealing has this axle...he said it's out of a 2.77 Posi 9 bolt rear but he never said if the rear end had disc or drum brakes!
Thanks again!
