Hey

I just bought a 1990 IROC-Z (350/700R4)... When you shift from Park to Drive, there is a slight 'hesitation'. The guy I bought it from said that his mechanic said it just needed a new transmission filter... Could this be possible?

-Thanks

Not unless the old one is cracked or plugged up. If its plugged up, then the filter is the least of your concerns. Sounds like they have no clue, so why not reccomend throwing a filter at it. Just like the people that say "drive it for a few days and see if it goes away". In reality, they mean to say "go away and maybe you will forget about it, since I don't have a clue".

What kind of hesitation are we talking about? Does it do it from Park to Reverse? How about Drive to Reverse and vice-versa? Does it do it only on initial engagement or every time?

Ok, I just examined the problem more thoroughly... When you shift from Park to Drive, Reverse to Drive, Neutral to Drive, it does it. What happens is... usually when you put your car into gear, there is like that split second pause right before the tranny actually "jumps" into gear... Well, there is an extra second in there... it's like it 'pauses' before it shifts. It's not really a long pause, just a second or two (but you CAN tell). And when it does shift into gear, it sounds like it may be a little forceful. However, it does NOT do it when shifting from like Drive to Neutral. The tranny feels strong and it doesn't slip in any gear. It shifts very quick and FIRM. Actually, it shifts A LOT firmer than my last car ('88 IROC - 350). This one will chirp the tires between 1st and 2nd... IS THAT NORMAL... because my '88 would not. This car does have a 3.23 rear end where as the '88 had a 2.77.
