26 spline or 27 spline????

I'm fixing to buy some 3.23 or 3.42 gears for my rear end, it has 2.73 gears in it now. Somebody told me that I have a 2- series carrier with 26 spline axels, but all I've seen in summit is 27 spline gears for 2-series carriers, what do I do. Is my spline 26 or 27, or does it matter?

Thanks

Please let me know as soon as possible

you have 26 spline axles, and just to let you know, there are no 27 spline axles for our cars. 90+ and a few 89s have 28 spline axles, everybody else has 26.

Then why do summit offer gears for 27 spline axels?

Thanks for reply

the gears dont matter, gears that fit 26 spline axles will fit ones with 28 , but GM did not make a 7.5/7.625" 10bolt with 27 spline axles, at leat not in 82+ cars and trucks. Posi units and differentials are spline dependent because that is where the splines end of the axles go.

ok, i looked in the Summit catalog, they told you the gears have a 27 spline pinion, that has nothing to do with the axles.

Exactly; the pinion has splines where the yoke goes on it (which is 27 in all 7½" 10-bolts), and side gears inside carriers have splines where axles go into them, which are either 26 or 28 in these rear ends. The 2 have nothing to do with each other.
