Help!!! Swapping Rear Gears
Could someone give me instructions on how to take a 3.42 ring, pinion, and carrier out of a 7.5 gm 10-bolt rear end....or would it be easier to swap the whole rear end? It came out of a 83 S-10, and it would be going in a 86 Trans Am.

I would reccomend getting a service manual. It would be to time consuming for somebody to sit and type the whole procedure step by step.
One thing to note, you'll have to take a backlash measurement and a Pattern check of the old rear before taking it apart. you will need to duplicate the pattern and backlash EXACTLY if you don't want them to whine. I would also reccomend new bearings.

Maybe its not such a good idea that you do this on your own...
But anyway, here is a quick rundown of the things needed to put a rearend together, you'll see the pattern check and measuring backlash. You'll have to do these two things to the S-10's rear before taking it apart.

take it to a pro. Its too much for you to handle. It takes lots of experience to set a rear up correctly.
