Iroc posi in Caprice rear?

If this isn't appropriate for these message boards, please just email me!

I was wondering... I know nothing about rear ends (haha) and I am a little confused as to what you can and can't do (hahahaha).

I have a 3:08 posi in my (now dead) Iroc. It is tight and trouble free, and I was wodering if I could simply switch the guts into my 1985 Caprice wagon's rear...?

What would have to be the same to do so? Both 9 bolt or something like that?

Thanks again!

if they're both 10 bolts and the axle spline is the same you can. all you'd have to is swap the ring gear and check back lash and contact pattern.

Both 10 bolts AND a 7.5 inch ring gear. My 'guess' is that the caprice got a bigger rear end.

I would say with 99.8735 % certainty, the Caprice wagon is an 8.5" 10 bolt, so no it won't accept a 7.5" carrier.

Anyone know of a car that may have a posi that would work... a Monte maybe?

A 2nd gen Camaro will work, as it is 8.5" rear. Lots of GM trucks will work too. Grand Nationals, Olds 442 etc. Monte's are 7.5" so no they won't work.
