Torque Arm? Uses? Harm?

I'm slowly fixing the problems with my newly purchased '87 IROC-Z.

Last weekend, when I replaced the tranny mount, I noticed something.

Now bear with me, as I'm a FWD guy, so my terminology may not be correct.

Anyway - There is a bar, I'm assuming the torque arm, that runs from the tail of the tranny to the rear end. (Runs along side of driveline)

I noticed that that I could move mine VERY easily. I mean, I bumped it and it moved. I checked out where it mounts and it looks not to be connected to the tranny.

What harm is there in this? I've got some wierd sounds coming out of my rear and drivetrain and I'm wondering if this arm being basically disconnected is having an effect.

Can anyone post any pics that have detail? I'm looking specifically for where this thing connects to the tranny.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's definitely supposed to be connected.

There's a bracket that bolts to the side of the trans, has a rubber bushing in it. There's a second bracket piece that clamps the bushing in place. Look and see if there is any such thing.

What are some of the side effects of having it disconnected?

You could roll the read axle over, you could send that bad into the pavement, and push it into the car, its very very bad, You NEED it connected, you can by the bracket from Jegs.

I'm gonna get some pics later. I looked at it and I can't find exactly wher it connects.

Its definately hanging there. Maybe that's what it clunking in the rear. When I shift or floor it from a stop.

Is there a possibility that if it were off, as mine basically is, that the rear end could be off angle and cause the yolk to "bind" or make a howling in the rear?

Accellerating isn't the big problem, going 60 mph and slamming on the brakes would be a big problem.

Welp - I've determined that mine is bad - I got under the car and could shake it up and down by hand.

I called all 4 autoparts stores in town and they kept trying to sell me the whole bar, and that was if they could even find that!

Does anyone have a P/N or something for this bushing or does anyone know where to get it?

I _REALLY_ WANT THE FIX THIS THING.

I got one made by Energy Suspension (poly) for $11.99 from Jegs, I got a poly tranny mount also so that I can do them both at the same time.

the torque arm bolts to the tailshaft of the tranny. you should have the tailshaft with the bolt holes for it. the bracket bolts go through the tailshaft, and connect to another bracket on the passenger side of the car.

when you pull your OG mount off, you might have some problems. when i first changed mine, the torque arm bracket where the mount goes was riveted into the sides of the bracket. so i could only cram my new mount in between the old brackets (from the OG bushing).

sounds really confusing, long story short, when i did my tranny swap, i pulled the brackets off completely and drilled out the rivets. hopefully this helps, and someone, somewhere knows what the hell i am trying to say.

lol

ima go lie down now.
